Nashville Electric Service is one of the 12 largest public electric utilities in the nation, distributing energy to over 360,000 customers in Middle Tennessee. The Nashville Electric Service serves the area that covers 700 square miles (1,800 km2), all of Davidson County and portions of the six surrounding counties. It has more than 1000 employees. The 5 member Electric Power Board of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County (the "Power Board") was established in 1939 when TVA purchased TEPCO or Tennessee Electric Power Co. for 79 million dollars. After the purchase, the five hundred employees of TEPCO become employees of the newly created Nashville Electric Service. Nashville Electric Service is the operating name of the Electric Power Board of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County.
